Networking Technician

Network Infrastructure & Control Systems (NICS) provides technical computer networking infrastructure support to authorized users for access to the university communications backbone. This includes the design, installation, monitoring, and support of specialized communications equipment attached to the campus backbone as well as access to external networks. Network security, network user registration, and network configuration functions are provided and coordinated by NICS. NICS supports and configures all switches, wireless access points, and routers that make up the university data network backbone. NICS supports a fully meshed, 10 gigabit backbone with multiple gigabit ethernet building uplinks and is involved in research and development of new networking technologies. NICS is responsible for reliable connectivity and administration of the campus network as well as access to the Internet.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Perform skilled work in the installation, testing, and maintenance of a variety of telecommunications fiber optic, broadband coaxial cable, and twisted pair cable network systems, fire alarm and security systems, and other electronic equipment.
  • Responsible for working with departments on scheduling to avoid disruptions and prompt response time to departments.
  • Communicate with co-workers to coordinate work efforts and resolve work order requests.
  • Communicate with customers to discuss alternative technical solutions.
  • Assist with the coordination of project planning for large project installations or enhancements of advanced technologies. Will coordinate small projects as assigned from planning to completion.
  • The employee is to serve in the on-call rotation for ITS Infrastructure. This will consist of being on-call 24 hours/7 days for emergencies once every six weeks.
