MENTORING PROGRAM MANAGER: Avery
Job Description: Avery Mentoring Program Manager position will be responsible for recruiting new volunteer mentors to serve as positive role models (committed to spending two hours/week with a youth) and matching them up with referred youth. The Avery Program Manager will work closely with the Avery Program Assistant to recruit and process new volunteers as well as meet new youth referrals. The Avery Mentoring Program Manager will support a caseload of current mentoring matches as well as work to make new matches. The Avery Mentoring Program Manager will be responsible for attending area meetings that build awareness and relationships with our mentoring program.
Qualifications: Previous experience working with youth is highly encouraged. A four-year degree is required. The successful candidate will possess outstanding people skills, be trauma skilled, have the ability to troubleshoot issues that may arise for youth and their volunteer mentors. The Avery Program Manager will need the ability to build rapport with young people, new volunteers as well as members of the Avery community. Candidate must be highly self-motivated and demonstrate an ability to manage multiple tasks at once, as well as adaptability and flexibility.
Position Responsibilities:
- Program development and supervision of staff
- Supervises all aspects of the mentoring program to include recruitment, retention, and appreciation of volunteer mentors.
- Supervises the Avery County Mentoring Program matches, School-based volunteers as well as interns.
- Attends to all requirements for JCPC funding to include NC Allies.
- Supervises one mentoring staff member and interns.
- Recruiting
- Recruit new volunteers from Lees-McRae, Avery community, faith-based community, civic clubs: Rotary, Kiwanis, Men’s Groups, Women’s Groups, and various other community groups.
- Screening Mentors
- Interview and screen potential mentors, including details such as reference letters and federal background checks
- Match
- Set up and facilitate initial home visits with youth and families. Set up match between screened, qualified volunteer, youth and their family Maintain and document regular and monthly communication with mentors, youth, and families.
- The Program Manager needs to have a keen awareness of all area social programs such as Feeding Avery Families, Hospitality House Services, DSS, and other free food programs.
- Paperwork
- Maintain current documentation for program evaluation, Maintain client tracking systems and keep them up to date. Maintain NC Allies and ensure that all students are put into this system properly.
- Attend Juvenile Court monthly.
Supervision: The Avery Mentoring Program Manager works under the direction of the Mentoring Program Director. The Avery Mentoring Manager works independently with minimal supervision in and around Avery County.
Hours of Work: This is a 30 hour/week, 12 month position. Hours for this position will be somewhat flexible, but hold to a traditional M-F schedule with occasional evening and weekend meetings.
Salary/Benefits: This is a salaried position that is eligible for paid health insurance and paid leave time.

AFTER SCHOOL LEAD PROGRAMMER (GLADE CREEK): Alleghany
Job Description: The After School Lead Programmer is responsible for overseeing students who are enrolled in Alleghany County Schools (in person; not virtual academy) for afterschool. The person in this position will supervise and build relationships with school age students, assist with academics, supervise volunteers, and maintain a structured and safe environment for the students, to include ensuring that all proper COVID protocols are being followed (masks, sanitizing, hand washing, physical distancing). This job does include a summer component. The staff member will work at least 6 weeks of summer camp.

Position Responsibilities:
- Lead developmentally appropriate activities for groups of participating K-8th grade students to support the program mission and goals.
- Be actively involved and supervising participants at all times. Participants should be in line of vision of an adult staff at all times. Designated high-risk participants should be within a few feet of an adult as much as possible.
- Take student head counts on a regular basis.
- Build relationships with students and hold them accountable and responsible for their behaviors.
- Provide on-site supervision for interns and volunteers.
- Develop weekly and monthly schedules that are consistent with the program goals.
- Provide primary supervision for all assigned participants attending the program.
- Provide/coordinate daily academic assistance for participants.
- Maintain a positive and professional relationship with participants’ parents/ guardians.
- Maintain accurate records and files for all assigned participants including (but not limited to) daily notes.
- Communicate student activities and program information to parents/guardians.
- Organize and set up equipment as necessary to carry out program activities.
- Coordinate evening clean up and securing of all facilities.
- Develop and maintain a supportive and professional rapport with students.
- Develop and maintain good working relationships with colleagues, supervisors, parents, collaborating partners, public school personnel and WYN staff.
- Keep Youth Relations Specialist informed of the students’ progress and/or potential challenges.
- Participate in supervision meetings with directors and request guidance with challenging students.
- When offered, attend additional trainings, meetings and seminars to maintain first aid, CPR, and Love and Logic certification/training, ACE training, resiliency training, and Motivational Interviewing training.
- Read, listen, and keep up to date on current research and practices in trauma, resiliency, and stress fields
- Follow all policies and procedures described in the WYN Policies and Procedures Manual.
- Supervision: The After School Lead Programmer will report directly to the Director of Student Programs.
- Hours of Work: This is a 30 hour, 12 month position (includes summer camp) Hours for this position will be M-F 12:30pm-6:30pm.
- Salary/Benefits: This position pays between $25,000-$30,000 (gross amount) annually and is also eligible for paid health insurance and paid leave time.
