The Watauga Leadership Institute recently hosted a Kickoff Retreat, bringing together 29 local leaders for the 2026 Spring Cohort. The day focused on building a strong learning community while centering on leadership development and community involvement.

Throughout the day, participants engaged in guided activities designed to push them beyond their comfort zones while strengthening both personal and professional leadership skills. Programming was led by Institute Facilitator Dr. Jim Street, alongside Retreat Group Leader Reggie Hunt, who guided participants through discussion, reflection, and interactive exercises. A keynote panel discussion titled Your Own Leadership Journeys featured insights from including Avery Hall, Senior Executive Commercial Banker, Yolanda Adams, Q’Pasa Appalachia, Appalachian State University/GEAR UP, and Brad Boswell, Appalachian State University, Office of Compliance & Ethics. Panelists shared candid perspectives on their leadership paths, challenges, and growth, sparking meaningful dialogue among participants.

Hall, who visited us from his home in Kernersville, was complimentary to the Institute and participants. "Having gone through Leadership Winston-Salem and Leadership Greensboro, I know the value of these programs," Hall said to participants. "I commend you all for your investment."

We extend a thank you to our partners who helped make the day a success. The Appalachian Theatre for serving as our host, FizzEd for providing lunch, Stickboy Bread Company and Betty’s Biscuits for breakfast, and the Downtown Boone Development Association for their partnership and support.

The Watauga Leadership Institute now functions as part of the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation, reinforcing a continued commitment to workforce development, organizational effectiveness, and long-term community impact. Ethan Dodson, Director of Development for the Boone Chamber and WLI Program Director, spoke to the diversity. of this years cohort. "Our leaders this year come from such different backgrounds and industries," said Dodson. "But, they all have one thing in common. They signed up because they want to get to know and have a positive impact on our community. It's inspiring to be around fellow citizens like this."

The Institute is made possible through the support of its sponsors, including Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina, SkyLine/SkyBest, LifeStore Bank and Insurance, and Carolina West Wireless.

This Kickoff Retreat marked a strong start for the 2026 Spring Cohort and set the foundation for a meaningful and impactful leadership journey ahead.
