Our History
Avery County is one of the youngest counties within North Carolina, but it carries a rich culture, stunning natural views, and friendly people. From its first prominent industry, Christmas tree farming, the county has grown into a prosperous community of businesses and organizations. With stunning destinations, like Grandfather Mountain and Beech Mountain Resort, leaders in education, Lees-McRae College and Mayland Community College, and unique festivals, The Woolly Worm Festival and Beech Mountain’s Mile High Kite Festival, Avery County is diverse, but unified.
