The Town of Boone Public Works Department is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Equipment Operator in the Street Division. This employee performs intermediate skilled work operating a variety of motorized equipment in the installation, maintenance and repair of streets, water and sewer lines, service lines, and other public facilities; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision. Limited supervision may be exercised over assigned crew members. The job will also require overtime/call back work for snow removal and/or water and sewer repairs. 

Education and Experience:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and considerable experience in performance of heavy manual work and in the operation of heavy motorized equipment.

Administrative Sergeant

The Town of Boone Police Department has a vacancy for the position of Administrative Sergeant.

Minimum Qualifications for Administrative Sergeant are:

  1. This process will be given as needed. After a promotional process, the completed promotional list remains

    valid for one year. The Chief of Police or his/her designee will choose the most qualified candidate for promotion from the current list. If the list of eligible candidates is less than three, a new promotional process may be given when an opening occurs.

  2. Candidates must have five years of credible police experience as a full-time law enforcement officer. The Chief of Police or his/her designee will have the final authority to determine what prior service will be deemed credible and how much credit will be given on a case by case basis if there is any doubt.

  3. Candidates may have had no suspensions more than one day, and/or no more than one written reprimand, or no combination of suspensions and written reprimands in the two years of employment prior to the position posting at Boone Police Department or at another agency where the credible police service occurred. 

  4. Process:

    • 1. Written exercise 33.3%

    • 2. PIO assessment/exercise 33.3%

    • 3. Sworn oral board 33.3% 

    • Plus, two points for an AA or AS degree (or equivalent hours); four points for a BA or BS degree (or equivalent hours) or higher.

    • Additional points may be added if further assessments are added to this process

A drug screen and a psychological test may be completed on internal candidates prior to promotion and shall be completed if an outside candidate is chosen as a condition of employment.

Grants Coordinator

The Town of Boone is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Grants Coordinator.  This position is responsible for overseeing the Town’s grant management activities associated with grants and recommend processes for streamlining grant contract, evaluation, and reporting processes.  The grants coordinator serves as a subject matter expert and will manage, track, and report grant activity through the life cycle of grants.  This position ensures the Town adheres to federal & state guidance and requirements set by regulatory agencies as well as Town policies and procedures.  This position will report directly to the Town Manager.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to interpret all grant eligibility, compliance and other related requirements.
  • Ability to analyze, research, and interpret grant guidelines.
  • Ability to independently research and analyze information and to propose programs and projects.

Minimum Education and/or Experience:

Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) in Business management, Public Administration or Finance/Accounting, and six (6) months or more related experience in business management, public administration, finance, or accounting.

Administrative Fire Captain

The Town of Boone Fire Department is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Administrative Fire Captain. This employee performs administrative and technical work to support the daily operations of the Boone Fire Department. Also, performs intermediate protective service work to include driving fire apparatus, the operation of pumps, fire suppression and rescue work. Work is performed under emergency and non-emergency conditions and frequently involves considerable personal hazard. Work is performed under regular supervision. Supervision is exercised over subordinate personnel and volunteers.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of administrative work for all aspects of fire department operations, thorough knowledge of computer programs including but not limited to ; Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Ability to assist in planning and organizing department needs over multiple budget years, thorough knowledge of ISO requirements and changes, thorough knowledge of the rules and regulations of the fire department, thorough knowledge of financial accounting principles and practices. Thorough knowledge of firefighting techniques, procedures and mechanics; general knowledge of emergency medical techniques and procedures; ability to operate equipment and apparatus safely and effectively; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and to prepare clear reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public; possession of mechanical aptitude; physical endurance and agility.

Education and Experience:
A combination of education and experience required to perform in the position. High School diploma or GED required. Education should be supplemented by college level courses in fire science and considerable experience in fire suppression. Five (5) years of total fire service experience with considerable experience as a Driver/Operator or higher position.

Special Requirements:
Possession of the following certifications:

  • Firefighter
  • Level I Fire Inspector, but Level II Fire Inspector is preferred
  • Level I Fire Service Instructor
  • Technical Rescuer
  • Driver Operator (Pumps)
  • Fire Officer I
  • Basic EMT certificate
    All certificates listed above are required. All certifications shall be recognized by the State of North Carolina. Possession of a Class B driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina is required. Must meet and maintain all department and state training and certification requirements for position.

Salary: $53,263 Employee will serve a six-month probation

Water Treatment Plant Maintenance Technician/Operator

The Town of Boone Public Utilities department seeks qualified applicants for the position of Water Treatment Plant Maintenance Technician/Operator. This employee performs intermediate skilled work maintaining and repairing specialized machinery and equipment in a water treatment plant and operating a water treatment plant; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.

Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or vocational school including or supplemented by courses in the mechanical trade and considerable experience in water treatment plant maintenance.

Special Requirements: Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the State of North Carolina. Possess or the ability to obtain a Class C Surface Water certificate issued by the State of North Carolina within one year of employment.

Salary: $42,022 plus excellent benefits. Employee will serve a six-month probation.
