Position: Sports Tourism & Event Coordinator

Reports to: President/CEO Boone Area Chamber of Commerce; Executive Director Boone/Watauga County Tourism Development Authority (day-to-day contacts)

Sports Tourism Committee, comprised of staff member representing Watauga County Economic Development, Appalachian State Athletics, Town of Boone, Watauga County Parks and Recreation, Boone Area Chamber of Commerce, Boone/Watauga County Tourism Development Authority

Wage Classification: Part-time

The Sports Tourism & Event Coordinator will promote and sell Boone and Watauga County to the sports event market segment for the purpose of bringing new events to the area while working with established partners to enhance established events.

Job Description: Sports Event Recruitment & Development

  • Identify, cultivate, and solicit sports events, meetings, clinics, and conventions that are a viable match for our destination. Emphasis placed on lead generation and strong contact management process. Attend relevant tradeshows and meetings, coordinate and conduct site inspections, and create and utilize database for maintaining lead data and communications.

  • Develop and execute bid presentation materials, coordinate lodging selections and contracts, and work with Chamber and TDA staffs to manage event promotions, marketing, and related activities.

  • Work with Appalachian State University, local town/county agencies and school systems, and independent sports leagues to cultivate and develop events and to secure facility and space usage.

  • Develop and manage community host volunteer program to assist in staffing at sporting and other events.

  • Work to assist Chamber and TDA staffs in non-sports event recruitment when needed.

Supportive functions:

  • Travel to industry-related tradeshows and meetings in various locations. Attend off-site functions by properly representing the Boone/Watauga County area with potential travel/meeting planners

  • Participate in key organizations as recommended by Chamber and TDA partners

  • Demonstrate principles and practices required in marketing and accounting possessing strong organizational and time management skills

  • Assist Chamber and TDA staff with preparation and execution of large scale community events as needed

Qualification Standards

  • Outgoing personality with interpersonal skills – excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Works independently with minimum supervision

  • Establish daily office hours and dedicated time periods of the day to work on Tourism & Event related business

  • Properly document event information and financial information for use in implementation of billing

  • Capable of holding privileged or proprietary information

  • Committed to being part of a team approach to generate increased visitor traffic to the area

    • Education: Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred, or significant experience in hospitality, tourism, or sports event management.

    • Experience: A minimum two years related experience, preferably in sports marketing or hospitality/tourism industry. Event management and/or tournament coordination experience is preferred.

    • Salary & Benefits: Salary based on experience. Not full-time benefits eligible

    • Start date: Fall 2018
