Catering Porter
Seeking a Catering Porter to support the entire Grandview Catering & Events team by consistently and accurately preparing for all catered events.
Responsibilities include:
- Using event sheets and checklists, pack all necessary equipment and items for individual events each day
- Clearly organize and label items as needed
- Maintain a clean and organized space in the kitchen, serveries, and storage areas
- Assist with receiving and unpacking deliveries
- Pack and unpack catering vehicles
- Drive staff, equipment, and/or food items to events
- Plan for, supervise, and execute Grandview Ballroom set-ups and breakdown to include moving furniture, cleaning restrooms and floors, trash removal, and table settings
- Communicate with front and back of house management regarding necessary updates, documentation, and resources
Work with the entire Grandview team on other duties as assigned
Catering Supervisor

The Catering Supervisor serves as an effective leader for Appalachian State University’s Grandview Catering & Events front-of-house staff by utilizing high standards in catering and event execution, employee relations, and management for a diverse team.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Maintain open and frequent communication with management team regarding event status, questions, concerns and new ideas
- Participate in developing and implementing training programs for front-of-house staff alongside Catering Manager and Associate Director
- Ensure timeliness of each event; This includes packing up and departing the kitchen, arrival at the event location, set up, service within the appropriate time frame, event breakdown
- Monitoring the quality of the product and service provided
- Manage a team of student staff for successful execution of catered events.
- Lead by example and be able to delegate tasks as needed before, during and after events
- Form positive working relationships with coworkers, including students, while remaining professional and respectful at all times
- Serve as a point of contact during events for the event host. Troubleshoot as needed with excellent customer service and taking action quickly
- Oversee equipment and workstation clean up at Grandview Catering & Events’ base
- Track various inventories
- Maintain awareness of workload balance across the department and be willing to assist as needed with atypical tasks
- Complete industry recommended certifications such as ServSafe, TIPS, CPR/AED, ALE educational sessions
- Work with the entire Grandview team on other duties as assigned
Catering Sous Chef
The Catering Sous Chef is responsible for providing an outstanding catering experience for students, faculty, and staff, as well as community members and alumni. Daily responsibilities include the production and service of hot and cold foods with excellent customer service. This is highly skilled and detailed work.
Other duties include:
- Assist with the preparation and planning of meal designs and menu options
- Produce high-quality plates both design and taste wise
- Ensure that kitchen activities operate in a timely manner
- Monitor and record inventory
- Provide support to junior kitchen employees with various tasks, including line cooking, food preparation, and dish plating
- Comply with and enforce sanitation regulations and safety standards
- Manage the kitchen team in the executive chef’s absence
- Maintain a positive and professional approach with coworkers and customers
- Following menu standards, standardized specifications, and ServSafe protocol
Catering Dishwasher
The Dishwasher ensures that the kitchen stays clean and organized.
Other duties include:
- Operation of dishwasher and other dishroom equipment to ensure cleanliness and sanitation of all items
- Wash specific items by hand as needed
- Organize and maintain clean equipment and ensure it gets put away in the appropriate location
- Take garbage and trash to dumpster area
- Daily washing of work areas, cooking equipment, walls and especially the floors
- Other duties include box crushing, stocking of food products into dry storage and refrigerators/freezers, along with frying oil and can recycling.
- Must be able to follow cleaning and sanitation procedures and other duties as assigned by a supervisor.
- Assist with other housekeeping and janitorial duties as assigned within the Catering Kitchen and Grandview Ballroom
Catering and Events Staff
We’re looking for a team-oriented and driven individual to hit the ground running and join our growing team. The successful candidate will work with others to ensure our daily catering operations and special events run efficiently while upholding our excellent customer service.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Being comfortable in a variety of event situations ranging from small coffee breaks, to high end banquets
- Assist with setting up tables and food service areas with chairs, linens and dishes
- Working at events from start to finish including: packing up food and equipment and departing the kitchen, arrival at the event location on time, set up, service within the appropriate time frame, event breakdown afterward
- Monitoring the quality of the product and service provided
- Understanding of safe food handling policies and procedures
- Serving food to guests at events, replenishing buffets, filling drinks and maintaining cleanliness of dining area
- Maintain open and frequent communication team members and supervisor regarding event status, questions, concerns and new ideas
- From positive working relationships with coworkers, including students, while remaining professional and respectful at all times
- Work with the entire Grandview team on other duties as assigned
