Barter Theatre
Barter Theatre in Abingdon, Va., takes pride in choosing the best of the best to be
performed on Barter's stages. The selection process is rewarding yet can also be
extremely demanding, as it is always a challenge to appease the desires of our uniquely
diverse patrons.
Therefore, when Barter Theatre produces a show that has the whole town talking
and two months later someone inquires, "When are you going o produce that play
again?," it is such a disappointment because there is no guarantee that a show will be
reproduced.
In this new year...take the time to do the things that can really make our lives
worthwhile, the things that stir our emotions and rejuvenate our spirits. "Carpe' Diem" –
Seize the Day, don't let another moment be wasted on regret.
Barter Theatre introduces a season of even more magnitude than ever before;
amazing plays brought to life the way only Barter Theatre can.
Richard Rose, Producing Artist Director, stated, "Don't put it off to another day.
There is no time like the present to treat yourself and those you love to an experience that
will make your soul want to sing a song of celebration in one of the best historic towns
anywhere in the world. What are you waiting for?"
"The King" is back! "Idols of the King" and Scot Bruce are back by popular
demand. So slap on those "Blue Suede Shoes" and "Shake, Rattle and Roll" on down to
see the one and only "Hunka, Hunka Burning Love" in the musical about the fans of
Elvis Presley, "The King of Rock and Roll." (Runs through March 17)
Witness a unique adaptation of William Shakespeare's most adventurous action
filled play, "Macbeth." As adapted by Richard Rose, experience the dark forces of
power, lust and greed in the intimacy of Barter's Stage II. (March 13 through May 19)
On Barter's Main Stage is a zany and hysterical musical murder mystery.
"Something's Afoot" takes a poke at Agatha Christie's mystery "Ten Little Indians."
(Playing March 22 through May 18)
The timeless "On Golden Pond," from the Academy Award-winning screenplay
that starred Henry Fonda, Katherine Hepburn and Jane Fonda, is in repertory, March 28
through May 18.
From Rodgers and Hammerstein to Barter's Main Stage comes "Oklahoma!" Set
in the pioneer days of the Oklahoma Territory, this exuberant musical is pure Americana!
Enjoy singing along to songs like "Oh, What a Beautiful Morning," "Surrey with the
Fringe on Top" and "People Will Say Weíre In Love." (May 23 through August 1)
The romantic comedy, "Talley's Folly," is all about love in a Missouri Boathouse.
(May 30 to August 17)
"The Importance of Being Earnest" is one of the funniest plays ever written. It's
a trivial comedy for serious people by Oscar Wilde. (June 5 through August 10)
"Tales From Blair Mountain" will be performed on Barter's Stage II. It's a
comedy by West Virginia playwright Victor Depta, in which the audience can experience
an emotional roller coaster ride as cultures and different perspectives clash in a humorous
outcome. (June 12 through August 4)
"My Way" captures the wit and charm of "Old Blue Eyes" in a musical tribute
that will leave you spellbound and wanting more in this musical smorgasbord of the best
of Frank Sinatra. (August 15 through September 14)
Barter brings one of the most memorable stories in 20th century fiction to Main
Stage with "To Kill A Mockingbird" by Harper Lee. This is a southern story that
continues to resonate. (September 19 through November 23)
The classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, "South Pacific" is a story of love
and World War II on an island in the South Pacific. It features "There's Nothing Like a
Dame," "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Out-a My Hair" and "Bali Hai." (October 3
through November 23)
Coming to Stage II is a story of reunion, grievances and comedy in "The Memory
of Water." It's a play choked full of quarrels over funeral arrangements, well-worn
family roles, unsatisfactory men and mixed memories of a highly feminine working-class
mother. (October 8 through November 17)
Barter Theatre brings you home for the holidays with "Holiday Memories." It's a
sweet and wonderful look at the holiday season through the eyes of a young boy who
reminds us that "family" can be comprised of anyone who touches the heart. (November
26 through December 22)
On Barter's Main Stage comes the Charles Dickens treasure and Barter audience

exhilaration of Scrooge's experience, the release from his small and selfish life to one of
giving, brotherhood and love. (November 29 through December 29)
